Technology has changed the way we connect with friends and family, and it’s shaking up the work place as well. You may have mastered phone and in-person interviews but what about your online interview skills?

Here are some tips to help you excel in an online interview:

No yoga pants, please. Same advice for slippers. An interview is still an interview. Don’t think that you can treat an online interview like FaceTime with your sibling or long-distance friend. You still need to dress professionally and present yourself as if you were in a face-to-face interview.

Check your surroundings. Is the room well-lit? Is your Metallica poster directly in the screen shot? Is your cat sleeping on the couch next to you? Try your best to create a neutral and professional environment. No background ‘uh-ohs.’

Test all equipment in advance. This is especially important if you haven’t used your webcam in a while. Familiarize yourself with the technology you’re using. You may be used to Skype, but the interface for GoToMeeting is very different. Believe me, you don’t want to be surprised when you attempt to log in for the interview and you are prompted to do a java update.

Have a back-up plan. Technology is hardly infallible. Be prepared to continue the interview via phone or reschedule if necessary.

At the end of the day, you want the hiring manager to remember that you’re a well-qualified candidate – instead of remembering the unprofessional distractions that can crop up in an online interview.

Following these tips will help you shine. Best of luck!

A real delicate balance exists between taking a job with potential and waiting for the perfect fit. The last decade of college graduates could afford to be picky about job options – but can you? While it is not a good idea to take a job you know you will not like, don’t overlook good opportunities because they require some necessary “grunt” work until you can take on more responsibility and grow the role.

There is something to be said about taking a few jobs early in your career that will teach you some intangible and yet extremely valuable virtues for the longevity of your working life. Here are a couple key take-aways from taking a role that is not exactly what you want to do long term.

RELIABILITY & HUMILITY: Even though detailed administrative work is not something I would say I enjoy, one of my earlier jobs out of college was as an executive assistant. I can honestly say that job taught me necessary skills that have sustained me through my career to date. The work was tedious and required a high attention to detail, which I did not have at the time.

The role and the organization helped me to develop those skills that propelled me into better roles as time went on. I learned how important filing documentation, scheduling, and taking good notes were to my supervisor’s success. These skills provided me a foundational building block that helped me to be a team player. I learned to be reliable, dependable, responsible, and trustworthy with confidential information. Again, these are intangible skills that are hard to measure but employers definitely notice when they are missing!

ACCOUNTABILITY & DILIGENCE: When you’re not exactly passionate about a set of tasks that a job requires, it is difficult to muster the motivation to give your best each day. Even your dream job may require you to be accountable for tedious tasks like balancing your company credit card each month. Again, not the most exciting task but a necessary one that makes doing what you love possible from day to day! Your employer will require you to be accountable and diligent with the menial tasks that seem unimportant but are crucial elements to developing a strong work ethic. Being diligent and persistent when no one is watching breeds integrity to get the job done. Employers describe this quality as a “whatever it takes” attitude. For most non-profits, this attitude is necessary to survive in a culture where your responsibilities change constantly and going the extra mile is not optional.

As you’re job hunting, do not underestimate the intangible qualities that may be gained in a job that will require you to do some of what you don’t enjoy doing. So yes, it is fair to expect less of those tasks that drain you in your job description as time goes on. However, there are some intangible qualities that are required of every career. It is better to learn them early than late, when there is more at stake in your career ladder.

Study hard. Get an internship. Undergraduate students hear these mantras over and over throughout their college experiences. Students are encouraged to make good grades, learn information to pass tests, and get As on projects. But things are different in the work world. From my experience, the lessons I’ve learned outside of the classroom have been the most useful to me.

Deadlines matter. Whether it was that professor who was a stickler for turning in your midterm on time or missing out on intramural softball because you missed the sign-up date, college taught you that deadlines are not mere suggestions. If you miss the due date, there are consequences. In the working world, it may not affect your grade or social life, but it will affect the way you are perceived by your colleagues and your supervisor. It could cost you opportunities to take on more responsibility in the future, or worse, your job itself. Pay attention to deadlines and work ahead to meet them.

Don’t procrastinate. Guzzling coffee and pulling all-nighters in the library just isn’t going to cut anymore. Ensuring that you meet deadlines means planning ahead so that you finish your work, not only on time, but that you do it well. You want to create a reputation among your colleagues of always being prepared and thorough.

Be a team player. Remember that group project when no one showed up for meetings and you ended up doing all the work? What about that guy who dominated the conversation in class? Don’t be that guy or girl. Pull your weight. Speak up in meetings but not too much. If you’re given a task to do, do it. Remember that your colleagues are counting on you to work together to achieve your goal.

Get involved. The students who made the most out of their college experience are the ones that got outside of their specific area of study and involved themselves with activities and events on campus. You have your specific role which should be your number one priority, but look for opportunities to vary your involvement in your organization. Like planning parties? Ask if you can join the social committee. Like to write? Maybe you can contribute a few posts to the organizational blog. You have varied skills, and the organization as a whole can benefit from them.

Don’t get me wrong. It is good that you studied hard and made good grades within your major. But that’s not everything. Every day, the experiences you have are forming your character and personality into the type of employee you will be as your career develops. Pay attention to honing those good habits and experiences – and then make the most of them.
